Kenya is an incredibly diverse country both in its geography and its people. There are more
than 40 tribes in Kenya, living in vastly different geographical areas. Like many African
countries a privileged few enjoy much of the country’s wealth while the overwhelming
majority live in poverty. The combination of these factors results in an incredible
diversity in the lives of the people, and therefore in their habits, their dress and
even in their facial features. For those of us who love to study faces, the
Kenyan people provide an almost unlimited resource. To support this
assertion, we offer the following small but representative collection.
Many qualities are expressed in these faces. Often it’s despair, hardship, or resignation,
but sometimes it’s optimism, hope and even joy, especially among the children.
As they say ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’. You may not agree that all these faces are
beautiful, but we think you’ll agree that they are all, at the very least, unforgettable.
