ABOUT US

Team "Tumaini" (Hope in Swahili) is a grassroots non-profit organization aimed at improving the lives of children in Kenya.  The main focus of the group is to help people become self-sufficient in the areas of education, clean water and health care by giving a 'hand up' and not a 'hand out'.

Team Tumaini (now Hope2Kenya) was formed by Sandy Foster, who upon retiring went on a trip to Kenya with a group of 30 people from Canada and the United States.  The goal was to build playgrounds at two orphanages.  The playground equipment never arrived and the group worked to paint, repair and clean up one orphanage in the Eldoret area of Kenya.  The orphanage is called Kaibeiyo.

When she returned home she realized the desperate plight of the Kenyan people and wanted to do more to help.  She knew that a large group did not accomplish as much as a small group and decided that she would put together a team of a maximum of 6 people including herself, raise money at home (North Bay, Ontario, Canada area) and go back to Kenya and help as much as possible by using the collected funds and doing whatever was necessary to help the children.  Each team member would pay their own expenses and all the monies raised would be spent directly on their projects.

As you can see by the projects they have done, they have accomplished a lot and helped many children.

Sandy’s motto is “I am only one, but still I am one.  I can not do everything but still I can do something.  I will not refuse to do the something I can do.”  Helen Keller

When asked why she goes her response is “because of the children.  No child should be dying of malnutrition, water borne diseases, malaria, TB or AIDS.  No child should be left an orphan without having basic needs fulfilled.  The little I can do might help the child who may one day lead Kenya into democracy and peace. There is a frustrating helplessness one feels for Kenya’s youth, who truly are playing with a stacked deck, yet they bring to each day a sense of Hope and Faith".
